John "Jack" Henry Kenneweg

John “Jack” Kenneweg, 82, longtime resident of Laurel Hill, McDonald, died Saturday, August 5, 2017 at Allegheny General Hospital after a short illness, surrounded by his family.

He was born March 10, 1935 in McDonald, a son of the late Wesley and Marie (Garrett) Kenneweg.

Mr. Kenneweg graduated from McDonald High School on June 3, 1954.  He played tackle on the WPIAL Class C Championship Teams in 1951 and 1952. The 1953 team moved up to Class B and went undefeated in the regular season, but lost to Sewickley 13-7 in the championship game.

He entered the US Army in 1955 serving at Fort Knox, KY and later in Friedberg Germany as a member of the 67th Field Artillery Regiment of the storied 3rd Armored Division. After an honorable discharge from the military, he began his career at J&L Steel in 1961 where he worked in the Blooming Mill at the Aliquippa Works.  After the mill closure in 1984, he began working at Small Arms Manufacturing near Bridgeville until his retirement in 1997.

Mr. Kenneweg was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, being an original member of Camp Chrysler in Wilcox.  He was a longtime fan of the Pirates; having attended the last World Series in Pittsburgh in 1979.  He was a member of the VFW Post 567, American Legion Post 485 and a Benefactor Member of the NRA.

He met Catherine Reed of Primrose in 1959 and they were married on April 8, 1961.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 56 years are two sons, John (Sherri) Kenneweg of McDonald and Walter Kenneweg of Reston, VA; a daughter Mary (Dave) Ross of Washington; two granddaughters, Katrina and Sarah; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his beloved infant son, John Reed Kenneweg; a brother, Wesley; and a sister, Patricia.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Nation Funeral Home, Inc., 220 E. Lincoln Ave., McDonald where a Blessing Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 10, 2017 with Rev. Ben Vaghetto, pastor of St. Alphonsus R.C. church, officiating.
