James "Roman" Jozwiakowski

May 14, 1938 — December 9, 2011

James “Roman” Jozwiakowski, 73, of Midway, died Friday, December 9, 2011 at McMurray Hills Manor.

H e was born May 14, 1938 in Pittsburgh, the son of the late Roman Raymond and Irene (Tarap) Jozwiakowski.

Mr. Jozwiakowski was a 1956 graduate of McDonald High School and his involvement in varsity football and basketball began a lifelong love of sports. In his senior year, he was a member of the varsity basketball team that reached the state finals. He served his country in the U.S. Army prior to the Vietnam War where his love for sports continued. While in the army, he played basketball and fast pitch softball for his unit and won several awards.

Throughout his life he continued to compete in sports. He became an avid golfer and played slow pitch softball. And although he couldn’t play, he followed football on all levels, from Ft. Cherry High School games to the NFL.

He was a charter member of the McDonald Sportsmen’s Association and loved hunting and fishing. He was a member of the N.R.A. and enjoyed reloading and sighting in his friends’ rifles for deer season.

Mr. Jozwiakowski worked as a steelworker for Shenango Inc., Neville Island for 30 years before retiring in 1992. He was a member of the United Steel Workers of America, of St. Alphonsus R.C. Church, McDonald and a member of the Midway V.F.W.

On July 14, 1962, he married Pauline M. Porfeli, who survives.

A lso surviving are two sons, Kevin J. (Tammy) Jozwiakowski of McDonald and Keith J. (Tina) Jozwiakowski of Pittsburgh; a daughter, Kara M. (Brad) Flambard of Bethel Park; a sister, Edyie Ann (Raymond) Posel of McDonald; and six grandchildren, Kyle J., Koryn E., Kolin J. and Konrad J. Jozwiakowski, Kolten A. and Kaden S. Flambard.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and from 6-8 p.m. Monday at Nation Funeral Home, 220 E. Lincoln Ave., McDonald. Friends are asked to meet at St. Alphonsus R.C. Church, McDonald, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 13. Burial will follow in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville. The family suggests memorials be made to American Diabetes Association, Landmarks Building, 100 West Station Square Drive 1st Floor, Suite 1900 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15219 .
