Francis J. Lander

May 6, 1926 — February 16, 2015

Francis J. Lander, 88, of Midway, died Monday, February 16, 2015 at Center for Compassionate Care of Mt. Lebanon.

He was born May 6, 1926 in McDonald, a son of the late Francis and Rhoda O. (Stewart) Lander.

Mr. Lander served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was a member of the V.F.W. Post #520 of Midway. He was also a member of the S.N.P.J. Lodge #89 of Midway.

He worked in maintenance at the coal washer for Consolidated Coal for 42 years and when it closed, he went to work for Scio China in Oakdale. He retired in 1981.

Mr. Lander loved NASCAR and was co-owner of the former AMOCO station in Midway.

In 1950, he married Margaret Elizabeth Smith, who died June 21, 1976. In 1978, he married Gladys Faye Donaldson Hlavay, who died Feb. 7, 2015.

Surviving are a daughter, Peggy A. (late Harry) Lambert of McDonald; three sons, William J. (Mary) Lander and George A. Lander, both of Midway, and Daniel P. Lander of Bubuque, IA; a step son, Tim Anterock of Carmichaels; a sister, Rhoda (late Wells) Miller of Katy, TX; a brother, Wayne (Mary Ann) Lander of Midway; a sister-in-law, Jo Anne Lander of Midway; a grandson, William M. (Jennifer) Lander; four step grandchildren, Jeff, Josh, Tymme and Taylor Anterock; and three great grandchildren, Maura, Elizabeth and William M. Lander, Jr.

Deceased is a granddaughter, Jamie L. Lander, who died March 9, 1999; two brothers, Benjamin L. Lander and Robert A. (late Pat) Lander.

Friends will be received from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Nation Funeral Home, Inc., 220 E. Lincoln Ave., McDonald, where services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, February 20 with Rev. Brian Kilbert officiating.  Burial will follow in National Cemetery Of The Alleghenies, Bridgeville. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Wounded Warrior Project, One Oxford Centre, 301 Grant Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15219.
